Our goal is to improve the lives of retired telecommunication workers who are in receipt of a pension from the Telecommunication Workers Pension Plan.
BCARTW Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting for 2024 was held May 22, 2024, in Nanaimo. For the first time in many years the TWPP Administrator and Pension Trustees were not in attendance. The BCARTW President, Rick Fleming, reported on attending the USW Convention along with the Vice-President and Treasurer. Rick ran for the position of Pension Trustee, but unfortunately he was unsuccessful. There were two resolutions that were passed by the BCARTW members at the 2023 AGM, one to make changes to the election process of Pension Trustees, and one for a guaranteed retiree on the Pension Board. These resolutions were taken to the USW Convention. Although we had followed the direction of the Executive of the USW in the writing and passing of these resolutions, both resolutions were ruled out of order. The Board has determined that there is nothing to be gained by pursuing these issues with the USW and will be looking for other avenues to follow.
Membership Recruitment
It is important to increase membership in the BCARTW. Tell all the retirees that you know about the BCARTW. Encourage participation at meetings and for positions on the Board of Directors.
Active members can join the BCARTW as non-voting members. If you know any active members, encourage participation and interest in the Pension Plan and BCARTW. We will need future retirees prepared to become involved.
Dues Reminders
Dues are $10/year. The membership year is May 1st to April 30th. Please forward your membership dues prior to April 30 each year. Dues can be paid online, E-transfer or by cheque.
Thank you for your support.
Sad News
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that your Board of Directors reports the recent passing of Brother Donald “Don” Bremner. Don was a long time TWU activist. He was an Executive Officer of the Union for many years, and when he was Secretary-Treasurer he was also a Pension Trustee. Don was one of the founding members of the BCARTW and served on the Board of Directors in our early years. He has always been there to offer his expertise and encouragement. Don will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
